Facebook Walks Back Censorship of Those Claiming COVID-19 Was Made in Chinese Wuhan Lab
One of the most commonly used tactics used by Big Tech, the media, and democrats is labeling information they don’t agree with as a “conspiracy theory.”
Here’s the dirty little secret about most of those conspiracy theories.
After enough time goes by, whether it’s a few months or even years, most of them often end up being true.
Now usually the hope for leftists is that enough time goes by that nobody cares anymore.
A former conspiracy theory will quietly be accepted as actual truth, and then they’ll move on to the next lie.
The problem is that they’ve gone to the well with that tactic far too often, and they are being exposed for it.
In their panic to control the narrative, they’re suddenly revealing in ironic fashion that they were the ones promulgating the lies all along.
Case and point:
Facebook is now reversing course on their previous censoring of any individuals who promote the idea that COVID-19 is a manmade virus that originated in a Wuhan lab in China.
According to a Facebook spokesperson, due to growing skepticism on the virus’ origin, the social media giant will no longer include the claim in their list of what they labeled to be “misleading health claims.”
The representative had this to say according to Politico:
Here's more from Politico on facebook's original stance:
Facebook will no longer take down posts claiming that Covid-19 was man-made or manufactured, a company spokesperson told POLITICO on Wednesday, a move that acknowledges the renewed debate about the virus’ origins.
A narrative in flux: Facebook’s policy tweak arrives as support surges in Washington for a fuller investigation into the origins of Covid-19 after the Wall Street Journal reported that three scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology were hospitalized in late 2019 with symptoms consistent with the virus. The findings have reinvigorated the debate about the so-called Wuhan lab-leak theory, once dismissed as a fringe conspiracy theory.
President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he has ordered the intelligence community to “redouble” its efforts to find out the virus’ origin and report back in 90 days. Biden also revealed that the intelligence community is split between two theories about Covid-19’s origin, and said the review will examine “whether it emerged from human contact with an infected animal or from a laboratory accident.” Bipartisan support is also building on Capitol Hill for a congressional inquiry.
But the focus of late has been on the notion that the virus may have accidentally escaped from the lab, not that it was man-made or purposely released — theories that could now propagate on Facebook. Genetic studies of the virus have found flaws in the protein it uses to bind to human cells. Those are features that someone trying to engineer a bioweapon likely would have avoided.
Shifting definitions on social media: Facebook announced in February it had expanded the list of misleading health claims that it would remove from its platforms to include those asserting that "COVID-19 is man-made or manufactured." The tech giant has updated its policies against false and misleading coronavirus information, including its running list of debunked claims, over the course of the pandemic in consultation with global health officials.
Breitbart has the latest on this course reversal from Facebook:
Facebook announced Wednesday it will no longer remove claims addressing the possible origins of the coronavirus and whether it is man-made or manufactured.
The policy change came on the same day President Joe Biden ordered U.S. intelligence agencies to “redouble their efforts” to investigate the origin of the virus, despite ending a State Department investigation under former President Donald Trump seeking the same goal, as Breitbart News reported.
Facebook released a memo detailing its new stance, pointing to “ongoing investigations” as reason for its change of heart while adding the proviso other restrictions remain.
A spokesman for the company said:
In light of ongoing investigations into the origin of COVID-19 and in consultation with public health experts, we will no longer remove the claim that COVID-19 is man-made from our apps.
We’re continuing to work with health experts to keep pace with the evolving nature of the pandemic and regularly update our policies as new facts and trends emerge.
