Dems Turn Against Nancy Pelosi, Threatening Her Plan To Ram Through Biden’s Agenda

Nine moderates Dems just threw a monkey wrench into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plan to ram through Biden’s agenda by threatening to withhold their votes from Democrats’ $3.5 trillion budget resolution later this month.

This hardball move means Pelosi’s two-track plan to push both a massive infrastructure bill and social spending agenda through the House is up in the air because she can’t afford to lose any votes, let alone 9.

“We will not consider voting for a budget resolution until the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passes the House and is signed into law,” wrote the group, led by Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey.

Others signing the letter besides Gottheimer include Democratic Reps. Filemon Vela, Henry Cuellar, and Vicente Gonzalez, all of Texas, as well as Reps. Ed Case of Hawaii, Jared Golden of Maine, Jim Costa of California, Carolyn Bourdeaux of Georgia, and Kurt Schrader of Oregon.

Here is the letter they sent to Pelosi: “Earlier this week, the Senate passed an historic bipartisan infrastructure package, with a supermajority of sixty-nine votes. President Biden swiftly applauded its passage, stating that he hopes Congress will send it to his desk as soon as possible.

“The House of Representatives should heed his call and immediately pass the legislation. We urge our House colleagues to follow the same path as the Senate: vote first on the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and then consider the budget resolution. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a bipartisan victory for our nation — the largest investment in infrastructure in a century.

“As the President noted following Senate passage, the legislation will help create millions of good-paying jobs a year across the nation and lead to continued strong economic growth. It includes major investments to fix America’s crumbling roads, bridges, tunnels, mass transit, railways, and water systems; it also allocates significant resources to electric vehicles, broadband buildout, climate resiliency, and environmental clean-up.

“The country is clamoring for infrastructure investment and commonsense, bipartisan solutions. This legislation does both, and will help us compete with China and others in the global economy. There is a reason why the bipartisan bill has the strong support of groups ranging from the AFL-CIO to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“Some have suggested that we hold off on considering the Senate infrastructure bill for months – until the reconciliation process is completed. We disagree.

“With the livelihoods of hardworking American families at stake, we simply can’t afford months of unnecessary delays and risk squandering this once-in-a-century, bipartisan infrastructure package.

“It’s time to get shovels in the ground and people to work. We will not consider voting for a budget resolution until the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passes the House and is signed into law.

“Thank you for your continued leadership. We stand ready to help Congress and the President enact bipartisan infrastructure legislation,” the letter said.

From Politico:

Pelosi can afford to lose only three votes in the House and will need near unanimity among Democrats to pass the budget resolution, which is slated for a vote when the House returns the week of Aug. 23.

The House must pass the budget resolution before Democrats can move ahead with passing a massive $3.5 trillion social spending package using the filibuster protections of reconciliation.

But Pelosi’s other flank, the progressives, have balked at the idea of putting the bipartisan infrastructure bill up for a vote first, warning leadership that they have enough members prepared to vote against the Senate-passed bill to tank it on the floor.

The latest move from Gottheimer and the other Democratic centrists ups the ante for Pelosi and her leadership team, who so far have shown no willingness to budge on their two-track approach.
