GOP Leaders Threaten To Remove Liz Cheney From Post Within Month: ‘Unwelcome Distraction’
GOP leadership has seen enough and they are starting to turn on Rep. Liz Cheney over her continued criticism of former President Donald Trump. Cheney is the GOP’s highest-ranking woman in Congress – she somehow overcame her father’s less than stellar reputation to win her House seat.
But now, according to a new report from Axios, GOP members are starting to hint that her time in leadership may be coming to an end. One conservative leader said do not be surprised to see her tossed from her post within a month.
Rep. Steve Scalise, the minority whip, and Jim Banks, chairman of the Republican Study Committee, are the ones talking and that is bad news for Cheney because both men are very close to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
McCarthy cannot control Cheney and the strain on their relationship is evident.
Banks (R-Ind.), openly questioned whether Cheney will survive the month in her position if she keeps it up.
“That’s what we got out of Liz Cheney, which doesn’t help us remain focused on that single goal,” he said.
“Her lack of focus on that, while being focused on other things, and proving her point, was an unwelcome distraction.”
“The sort of sideline distractions at the GOP retreat will only serve to hold us back from being focused on that nearly unanimous goal we have as a conference,” Banks said.
“That’s up to her,” he said if she will keep her post. “I think a lot of us would like to see her join the team, be on the same team, same mission, the same focus. And at this point, that’s what many of us are questioning.”
McCarthy said earlier: “If you’re sitting here at a retreat that’s focused on policy, focused on the future of making American next-century, and you’re talking about something else, you’re not being productive.”
Trump did respond directly to Cheney saying:
“Liz Cheney is polling sooo low in Wyoming, and has sooo little support, even from the Wyoming Republican Party, that she is looking for a way out of her Congressional race.
“Based on all polling, there is no way she can win. She’ll either be yet another lobbyist or maybe embarrass her family by running for President, in order to save face.
“This warmongering fool wants to stay in the Middle East and Afghanistan for another 19 years, but doesn’t consider the big picture—Russia and China.”
“I’ve been clear in my views about President Trump and the extent to which following January 6th, I don’t believe that he should be playing a role in the future of the party or the country.”
She said of former President Donald Trump’s chances to be the 2024 nominee:
“I don’t think that that’s going to happen. And I think it’s important that it not happen given what he did.”
She said of those Cruz and Hawley, “I think we have a huge number of interesting candidates, but I think that we’re going to be in a good position to be able to take the White House. I do think that some of our candidates who led the charge, particularly the senators who led the unconstitutional charge, not to certify the election, you know, in my view that’s disqualifying.”
